My Air Conditioner Smells Funky

Summers in Brooklyn get can exceptionally hot. When the dog days of summer are upon us, the only thing to do is to turn on the air conditioning and stay indoors. What do you do if you notice a funky smell coming from your unit? An unpleasant smell can put a damper on your relaxation plans.

There are a few different smells that can come from an air conditioner and each smell signifies various issues. Below are the most common smells and what they mean:

air-conditioning-unitFeet – If your air conditioner smells of feet or dirty socks, you are most likely dealing with a dirty or clogged unit. A thorough cleaning by a professional is necessary.

Exhaust Fumes – There are fluids in the engine and other parts of the unit that can produce this type of smell. Smells of exhaust fumes from an air conditioner mean that the fluids are leaking.

Gunpowder – This type of smell typically means that the circuit board or fan motor has shorted out.

Skunk – A skunk-like smell means that there is a gas leak in your unit. The gas methyl-mercaptan will emit an odor similar to a skunk’s spray. A gas leak can be incredibly dangerous. If you notice this smell from your air conditioner, evacuate the home and contact a professional immediately.

Mildew – This is one of the most common smells to come from an air conditioning unit. If a moldy odor comes from your unit when turned on, mildew or fungus has probably begun to grow.
